Plastic inspection manholes are essential components in modern drainage systems. Typically composed of a manhole base, a shaft (riser), and a protective or non-protective cover, they are widely used in residential communities and municipal drainage networks. Positioned at regular intervals, pipe intersections, or sharp turns, they allow maintenance teams to inspect and monitor the condition of drainage and sewage pipelines.

Plastic manhole bases generally fall into two categories: Flow Channel Manholes and Silt Trap Manholes.

Let’s dive deeper into what these two types of manholes are and how they differ.

What is a Silt Trap Manhole? (Stormwater Manhole)

A Silt Trap Manhole is an inspection manhole designed with an integrated sediment chamber at its base. Its primary purpose is to collect and settle mud, sand, and other debris from water, allowing solids to precipitate at the bottom.

In municipal drainage projects, these are heavily utilized in rainwater harvesting and stormwater management systems, which is why they are often referred to simply as Stormwater Manholes.

How It Works and Key Benefits:

Note: While Silt Trap Manholes are standard for stormwater, Flow Channel Manholes can occasionally be used in rainwater pipelines instead, provided that there are sufficient silt trap manholes already installed upstream.

What is a Flow Channel Manhole? (Sewage Manhole)

Unlike the silt trap variant, a Flow Channel Manhole base does not have a sediment chamber. Instead, its bottom features a smooth, contoured channel (bench flow) designed to guide wastewater through swiftly without interruption.

Because sewage contains organic waste that should not be left to sit and stagnate, these manholes are designed to keep the water moving, which is why they are commonly called Sewage Manholes.
